Human Rights in Ukraine
30.10.2014

According to the organization "Freedom House," which investigates civil and political freedoms in the world, it recently became possible to label Ukraine a "free" country. But at the moment, we are unable to discuss stability and peace in our state. According to the "Freedom House" the situation, which relates to human rights and democracy, began to deteriorate since 2010, when Viktor Yanukovych became the president of Ukraine.

The first steps were:

Reduction of basic freedom of speech;

Increased activity of the Security Service of Ukraine;

Limitations on mass media organization;

Harassment of opposition figures by the court.

All this influenced the change of status for Ukraine: from "free" to "partly free" (in 2011). During the presidency of Yanukovych, the level of democracy--compared with previous years--began to decrease. According to the "Freedom House," if the tendencies of such a situation will not be suspended, Ukraine will find itself on a path that eventually leads her to authoritarianism and kleptocracy (i.e., swindlers gain power for the purpose of enriching and increasing their political influence).

After all, what else can we say about human rights?

The right to a fair trial– All amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine are negative: the increase in the term of consideration of the case, the absence of the principle of parts equality, the neglect of the principle of presumption of innocence and, of course, the corruption of the court system.

Freedom of the media– Aggression against journalists is quite common, for the disclosure and dissemination of information related to the violations of the authorities.

Torture and detention conditions– There were reports of ill-treatment and torture in police stations, including unnecessarily long terms for prisoners. Special cruelty was traced to prison colonies: terrible sanitary conditions, incongruous medical care, and moral pressure. Sometimes this set of factors has been the impetus for suicide.

Refugees and migrants– In Ukraine, the process of unified migration is stable: there are no visible changes in the situation. This is a violation of the rights of refugees and migrants.

Human trafficking

This is also a significant problem; these trends are increasing, as the punishment is simple probation. Ukraine was and remains a country which is the destination and transit route of human trafficking.

Consequently, we can say that the situation in Ukraine is getting worse; the positive dynamics of the development of human rights are absent. We have only one way out this situation – shift in power and "revolution" in all areas relating to this issue. Only in this case, there is an opportunity for positive changes for the situation in Ukraine.
